Although uncertain, this breed is though to involve the Manchester Terrier and Welsh Corgi and dates back to the the mid 1800s. It is believed that the Corgi's used to drive cattle from Wales to Lancashire were cross bred with Manchester Terrier's enroute. Some strains of the Dachshund are also believed to exist.

There are two types of the Lancashire Heeler. One known as the Butchers Heeler and the other slightly larger dog know as the Ormskirk Heeler. Although used for herding, they retain many terrier instincts for rabbiting and ratting. These sturdy dogs are alert and energetic and are affectionate to their owners.

In 1978 the Lancashire Heeler Club was formed and in 1981 the breed was recognised by the British Kennel Club.
