The translation of the name Hovawart somewhat describes it primary working activity 'guardian of the property'. Its origins are in the Harz and Black Forest regions of Germany where it was bred to guard his owners family and property against human and animal aggressors. Despite an old ancestry, the breed was not defined until the 20th century. Hovawarts first appeared in the UK in 1980 and a breed club was formed in 1982 and holds full Kennel Club recognition.
